Rifles for West Virginia buck season

Buck season is close to a state holiday in West Virginia: schools in many counties close for opening day, and camps fill up across the mountains. For 2026 the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources set the buck firearms season to open Monday, November 23 and close Sunday, December 6. Logan, McDowell, Mingo and Wyoming counties remain closed to firearms deer hunting. Check the WVDNR regulations for antlerless and muzzleloader seasons in your county.

Mountain hunting means short shots

Most West Virginia deer are shot across a hollow or down a hardwood ridge, often at under 150 yards. Fast handling and a quick-to-find scope matter more than long-range performance.

.270 Winchester and .30-06 Springfield: the traditional choices in West Virginia camps.
.308 Winchester: short action, plenty of power, many rifle choices.
6.5 Creedmoor: accurate and mild, good for field edges and pipeline cuts.
.350 Legend: a straight-wall option with light recoil.

Rifle and optics

A handy bolt action or lever gun with a 2-7x or 3-9x scope is ideal. Look at the Ruger American, Savage 110, Henry and Marlin lever guns, Tikka T3x and Browning X-Bolt. Low-light performance matters more than magnification in the timber.

Blaze orange and licenses

West Virginia requires deer hunters in firearms seasons to wear at least 400 square inches of blaze orange on the outer clothing. Hunter education is required for hunters born on or after January 1, 1975, with an apprentice option. Check the current regulations for details.

Bear and hog

West Virginia has a strong black bear population with firearms seasons in many counties, and a very limited wild boar season in a few southern counties. A .30-06 or .308 with a good bullet handles both.
