Concealed carry in West Virginia
West Virginia lets adults carry concealed without a license and still issues a license for people who want the extra benefits. This guide explains both. It reflects the law as of September 2026 and is not legal advice.
Permitless carry
Since May 2016, anyone 21 or older who can legally possess a firearm may carry a concealed handgun in West Virginia without a license. You must still respect off-limits places and posted private property.
The concealed handgun license
The license is issued by the sheriff of the county where you live. Applicants complete a qualifying firearms training course, submit fingerprints and pass a background check. Adults 18 to 20 can apply for a provisional license. The license is valid for five years. Check with your county sheriff for the current fee and accepted courses.
Why get one
- Travel: many states honor the West Virginia license but not permitless carry.
- Buying: depending on current ATF recognition, the license may replace the NICS check at a dealer.
- Training: the course covers the law of self-defense.
Choosing a carry pistol
Compact 9mm pistols dominate: the Glock 19 and 43X, SIG P365 family, Springfield Hellcat, Smith and Wesson Shield Plus and Ruger Max-9. In bear country, some hunters carry a 10mm or .44 Magnum revolver in the woods. Choose a rigid holster that covers the trigger guard and practice until your draw is smooth.
Reciprocity
Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Virginia recognize West Virginia licenses in some form, while Maryland does not. Check each state's current list before you travel.
